Illinois Bone & Joint Institute

In 2014, Medicare began its “Bundled Payment Care Initiative” (BPCI) to evaluate the efficacy of alternative health care delivery models. Illinois Bone and Joint Institute (IBJI), the largest musculoskeletal practice in the Midwest, has been participating in one of these projects since then. IBJI has developed a program that seeks to better manage the post-operative rehabilitation of Medicare patients following joint replacement surgery.

Through a pre-emptive evaluation and customized care plan, patient engagement, provider collaboration and supportive technology, Illinois Bone and Joint Institute has decreased the cost of joint replacement rehabilitation while maintaining or improving clinical quality and patient satisfaction. While there are significant differences between the Medicare population and injured workers, there are still opportunities for employers to learn from this, create new delivery models and realize improved value.
