This is a full day live seminar that provides essential information for employers who operate in Illinois and Indiana; and anyone who is interested in exploring the similarities and differences between the two states’ employment and labor laws.  Attorneys from the Chicago and Indianapolis offices’ Labor and Employment team of SmithAmundsen will examine litigation and employee dispute avoidance strategies and offer best practices that are in compliance in both states.  Sample policies will be provided to help employers to shape their procedure and practices necessary to operate in both states.  Specific topics include:

-Wage and Hour Issues
-Regulating guns in the workplace
-Obligations after the employment relationship ends
-Employee vs. Independent contractor – making the distinction
-Background Checks – the differences in the two states
-PTO and unpaid leave requirements
-Employee handbooks and policies – finding common ground and highlighting differences
-Employee Terminations and limits of “at-will” employment in each state
-Indiana is a “Right To Work” state – what does that mean and how it is different from Illinois
-Illinois & Indiana DOL/EEO/Civil Rights Agencies – compare and contrast of the states’ compliance agencies and their very different approaches
