Tobacco use is one of the major contributors to preventable and treatable disease in our nation and costs to employers and our healthcare system in general represents over $4 billion annually in direct healthcare costs. Furthermore, employers lose an additional $4.4 billion in productivity costs related to smoking and tobacco use every year.
Beginning January 1, 2012, Illinois employers will be able to take advantage of a new law that requires Illinois insurers to inform employers of their ability to purchase new tobacco use cessation coverage, which provides incentives to employees and their covered dependents to stop smoking and using tobacco products.
