Editorial: Corporate Illinois and the Illinois General Assembly are once again on a collision course.

Needless to say, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce is bitterly opposed to Cullerton’s plan.

“Forcing corporations to disclose their income tax return information serves no valid public policy purpose, threatens the corporation to possible political scrutiny, and is another prime example of how the State of Illinois shows its bias against Illinois job creators,” wrote the Illinois Chamber in an action alert to its members.

And the Illinois Chamber is right.

Corporate tax-transparency plan a step toward progressive tax in Illinois?

“Taxpayers should not have to defend their tax returns in the court of public opinion, against subjective accusations of what constitutes their ‘fair share,’” Illinois Chamber of Commerce president Doug Whitley said in a statement e-mailed to Illinois Watchdog. “Revealing confidential tax information can result in purposefully misleading accusations by persons attempting to use the information for political gain or in inaccurate statements or interpretations by those who don’t understand the complexities of corporate tax laws.”

Ill. Legislature seek business tax transparency

The plan would further burden businesses, force them to provide out-of-context numbers, and open doors to competitors in gaining an edge, according to Todd Maisch of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.

“Not only will you have to put all this sensitive information out there, where in almost every other state it’s completely private, but now they’re going to have to call a press conference to try and explain it,” Maisch said.
