Illinois voters to tackle state pension amendment

Doug Whitley, president of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, said the pension systems were taken for granted for years by the Legislature while benefits increased and the program expended without any concern for how the state’s share would be paid. Any move to begin controlling it, he said, should be welcome.

Experts predict growth in healthcare, transportation and manufacturing

As president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Douglas L. Whitley agreed that certain industries in Northern Illinois would continue to improve.
“The industries that I think are doing well and will continue to thrive in 2012 are health care, transportation and manufacturing,” he said. “There will be some uptick in technology. The ones we’re worried about, in the short term, are agriculture because of the drought. It’s likely to have impact on food prices next year.”

“When I’ve spoken to the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s Doug Whitley and Jimmy John (Liatud), both of them said it’s not the tax rate that’s causing businesses to leave Illinois. As a matter of fact we’re a relatively low-tax state for businesses,” said Pierog.

“Whitley said it’s regulation, and a lack of efficiency. If someone wants to build a company, they’re not fast-tracked to it. There’s too many procedures, too many taxing bodies.”
